QBR6 - iPhone Armband and Exercise App

Design Brief

Objectives

This project was about creating an armband, phone case and app for the iPhone for runners. 

Problem Statement

  • Traditional armbands are hard to utilize while running.
  • monitoring information is not easily shared or exportable to other apps.
  • Training is much more than just the miles you do… it’s the physical and mental condition of the runner, weather, the terrain. 

Armband & App Uses

Training

An athlete tracking his/her health has an iphone or android phone and wants to track health stats, vitals and levels, while exercising.

  • Visibility & ease of use
  • Comfort & cord length
  • Can’t use data in a meaningful way

Monitoring

Doctor working with patient to record short and long term health information that can be tracked and transferred to patient records. 

  • Memory issues from client
  • Can’t monitor in real time
  • Can’t use data in a meaningful way

Events

Race event where there is a sea of people and coordinators want the ability to know how to best utilize emergency personnel resources. Sync information from runner and sponsored event.

  • No universal method for EMT
  • Current devices can’t monitor immediate health of individual
  • Civil rights issues – HIPA

Real World Use

Start

Start running

I recorded people as they started their applications as the race started. Those with armbands did not do anything to start their apps to record their time. The runners who ran with phone in hand precariously dodged runners and obstacles to while initiating their apps.

Finish

Finish Line

As runners cross the line they must then activate their apps and then swipe to stop recording. While again navigating the course and other runners they must stop the app as soon as possible to record their best time. Each second wasted drags your overall average time down.
